At one point he had a perfect record of 16-0, was WEC middleweight champion and was possibly close to signing with the UFC, but he immersed himself in a party-driven lifestyle fueled by alcohol and drugs.

Filho points out that before his fight with Chael Sonnen in 2007, he was drunk at a party in Mexico when someone offered him cocaine for the first time, and it did not take long for him to become a regular consumer.

He was able to beat Sonnen despite the drugs, but he quickly lost the way and had to postpone a rematch because he went into rehab.

Filho was a disaster by the time he faced Sonnen for the second time, he came weighing 245 pounds because he preferred to party rather than train, that led him to have to make a heavy weight cut and still was over the limit.

The meeting was held and proved to be one of the strangest fights in the history of MMA, with Filho behaving erratically, talking to himself, and sometimes being disoriented, and that led him to fall by decision.

Filho’s problems are now visible to everyone, and his career was ruined by the abuse of drugs and personal problems that occurred in the years following the fight with Sonnen.
