Shamrock vs. Gracie 3 started out very, very slowly. For a solid two minutes, both men just waved hands at one another, with the biggest shot landed being a glancing front kick from Royce. Eventually, Shamrock jumped in with punches and they clinched up and started landing knees. That’s where things went sideways.
One of Gracie’s knees hit Shamrock’s cup in the worst possible way, hitting the front and dragging the whole thing up (it pinches them on top of the plain blunt trauma…it hurts a bunch, trust me). The ref didn’t spot it, though, and as Shamrock was covering his nether region, Gracie took advantage of the opportunity, getting him down with a body lock takedown and landing some big ground and pound.
Shamrock wasn’t able to defend himself, and the ref quickly called it off. From there, things got ugly as Shamrock yelled at the ref and had words with Royce, saying he intentionally kneed him in the nuts. Royce only made matters worse during the post fight interview, as he ribbed Shamrock for complaining and hinted that it really actually was maybe intentional. Shamrock apologized for his actions and was visibly saddened by the ending.
