Watch Stipe Miocic Destroy Fabricio Werdum, Take UFC Heavyweight Title

MMA

UFC 198 was an up-and-down night of fights but it ended with a bang when Stipe Miocic put Fabricio Werdum’s lights out in the main event. The heavy-handed challenger entered the event as an underdog, but showed that he is not somebody fans should doubt by catching the legend killer with a clean right hand and finishing him with heavy ground and pound.

It was a really impressive win by the Clevelander (who now happens to be the city’s first real champion in 52 years) but kind of an odd one, as the elite submission wizard Werdum got caught running after Miocic like a damn fool. Don’t agree with that assessment? Well just check out the dang knockout for yourself!

Seriously, what was he even thinking?

Werdum has long been regarded as the greatest submission artist in the heavyweight division, and possibly in the entire sport. He has made a number of legends in the sport tap, and took the UFC heavyweight title with a guillotine choke of Cain Velasquez. His striking game has proven to be solid over the years, as he beat up respected fighters like Roy Nelson, Travis Browne and actually knocked out Mark Hunt.

What’s more, Werdum has actually been fairly solid defensively, taking minimal punishment from solid hitters and doing a good job of out-landing any and all comers. Why he threw caution to the wind against Miocic is anyone’s guess.

Miocic’s win isn’t any fluke, though. He has heavy hands and is highly accurate, which is how he managed to find Werdum’s chin so effortlessly. It’s impossible to guess how long he’ll be able to hold onto the title for, but it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he joined Brock Lesnar and Tim Sylvia in the super-exclusive “multiple title defenses” club.
