According to reports, Cena’s shoulder has been troubling for a long while, and was likely exacerbated by his hard training regimen. His last televised match was opposite Alberto Del Rio on Monday Night RAW last week (December 28). It is not believed that the injury occurred there.
Interestingly, the December 29 edition of RAW had an off-the-air moment that teased a Roman Reigns vs. John Cena rivalry. The rumor ahead of this announcement, however, was that the WWE was planning to have Cena linger outside the main event picture before entering into a rivalry with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32.
A match with ‘Taker makes sense on many levels. While it would function as a Face vs. Face match and doesn’t necessarily have a built-in storyline like a match with Kane or Bray Wyatt, Cena vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania pits two of the greatest most powerful forces in kayfabe history (The Streak vs. LOLCENAWINS) against one another. Not only that, but it actually makes it more difficult to pick a winner, given that ‘Taker and the WWE may be willing to break “go out on your back” tradition, as Cena could take a loss at WrestleMania and lose no credibility.
Either way, the WWE is currently planning for a Cena-less Winter and Spring. When, and if, he comes back will be one of the most interesting parts of 2016.
