John Cena Loses United States Title Clean at WWE Hell in a Cell

Wrestling

The match itself was a relatively standard John Cena affair, but…much shorter than usual. Del Rio mounted early offense, Cena made a comeback, but the ending to the fight came both quickly and suddenly.

While US Open Challenge matches have lasted up to 20 minutes, this match with Del Rio clocked in under eight and following an odd sequence. While Del Rio has had a half-dozen finishers over the year, the ending didn’t come by a cross armbreaker or a Rompe Destinos. No, the ending came by an AA-countering back-stabber, followed by…a kick? Yes. While it was supposed to be an homage to Del Rio’s earlier title-winning efforts, it came off almost like a botch.

NOT THIS TIME!

NOT THIS TIME!

That said while this is a major shift for the WWE, it wasn’t a shock for observant fans. As FightState discussed last week, John Cena is poised to take a prolonged vacation, which he may or may not come back from, and the WWE wasn’t going to let him take his title with him. We’ll see if he ends up facing Del Rio on Monday Night Raw in a rematch.
