World Boxing Champ Amir Khan Considering Making The Jump To MMA

Recently, Amir Khan announced that he’s one of the new owners of the Super Fight League, an MMA promotion based in India, that puts on fights worldwide.

SFL was founded in 2012 and has put on about 40 shows so far. Along with Khan, they’ve been assembling a crack-team of fighting and media veterans to help launch the promotion to the next level.

Some of the notable fighters who have fought in the Super Fight League include: Todd Duffee, Jeff Monson, Trevor Prangley, and Olympic Judo medalist Satoshi Ishii. If Amir Khan really wanted to generate some buzz for the SFL, he’d step inside the cage. He would fare a lot better than James Toney did, and he wouldn’t be up against UFC-caliber fighters.

With the continued controversy around the new Reebok deal over at the UFC, chances are we’re going to see more and more fighters looking elsewhere as their contracts expire. Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson recently signed a sweet deal with Bellator that the UFC wasn’t able to match, due to their partnerships, which could have exposed a loophole. In every UFC contract, they have matching rights, so if another organization makes an offer for a fighter, the UFC is allowed to match it. If offers from other promotions include allowing the fighters to earn significantly more through sponsor money, the UFC won’t be able to match.

With deep pockets and a fight-game savvy team, the SFL could make a real dent, especially if they’re able to woo over hardcore boxing fans who have been somewhat reluctant to embrace mixed martial arts.
