Rousey and Diaz have been friends for years now, dating back to the early days of her reign as Strikeforce bantamweight champion. The Rowdy One has spent some time out in Stockton, California training at Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu alongside Nick, his brother Nate, and Jake Shields. While they aren’t BFFs, Rousey can still be spotted alongside Nick a few times each year, hanging out at events and working BJJ in the gym.
Though he has long been one of the most controversial figures in MMA, Diaz has become a sympathetic one over the last 48 hours. The NSAC, which governs combat sports in Las Vegas, NV, has long been panned for its uneven punishment of fighters. While this is Diaz’s third drug test failure for marijuana, and it’s hard to imagine him slowing down on his use of the sticky icky, the fact that he received five years while Anderson Silva tested positive for four banned substances but received just one year, and that the next UFC event is headlined by Josh Barnett, who has failed three drug tests due to steroid use, does not sit well with many.
A slew of fighters, past and present, have spoken out in favor of Diaz. Unfortunately, regardless of how many people get behind him, his days as a fighter are likely over. Sad times, fight fans…
