So…is it true? Is Jones actually trying to avoid McCarthy because he doesn’t want him interfering with eyepokes? Well, probably not.
While McCarthy is widely viewed as the best ref in the business…he lets more than a little bit of stuff go. He’s allowed lots of fights to carry on when they shouldn’t have and actually once declared Bobby Green the winner of a fight because James Krause couldn’t continue after getting kicked in the cup three times in four minutes.
He’s a dick out of the cage, too!
In reality, Jones is likely trying to avoid McCarthy for the same reason Daniel Cormier was avoiding Herb Dean; his level of willingness to let a fight continue along the cage. Herb Dean is slow to break up clinching, which benefits Jones and his strong wrestling game. McCarthy is quick to do so, which benefits Cormier in this case, as Jones’ Greco-Roman skills can result in lengthy battles in the corners.
Still…expect Jones to poke Cormier in the eye at least once.
