Jon Jones Finally Breaks Silence About His Accident, Suspension, and Return to the UFC

Here’s the video:

Is an hour too long to watch? I can’t blame you. Here are the highlights:

  • Jones says the accident happened after a night of partying. He was approaching a stop light and saw the lights in another lane turn green and believed he was clear to continue, which led to him T-boning a car coming across the intersection. From there, basically, his flight instinct kicked in and he ran on foot.
  • He says the tidbit about him returning to the scene to grab some cash was overblown. He says he got only a few yards away from the car before turning around to grab a marijuana bowl he had in the cupholder. He couldn’t find it, and then just left after grabbing some things out of his glove box.
  • On that note, he believes he was addicted to marijuana and had a drinking problem. Not cocaine, though. He says he tried coke the night before the random NSAC drug test and didn’t enjoy it.
  • Jones says he was, indeed, “fake”. He says his idea of a champion was Michael Jordan and pre-sex scandal Tiger Woods and he tried to model himself after them.
  • He discusses how he really didn’t try that hard as champion, and the fact that he was still wildly successful hurt him. In particular, he says he barely prepared for the fight with Alexander Gustafsson and got through it on guts alone. That unintentionally confirmed to him that he could eat, drink, party and still win fights.
  • He says now he is eating clean, no longer drinking or smoking, and is going for the belt.
  • Interestingly, it’s pretty clear that he HATES the UFC. He is still clearly sore about how they handled the fallout of the UFC 151 cancellation, and is very, very angry about how the UFC had him fight a juiced up Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.
