How Floyd Mayweather Bought Out His Contract for $750,000 and Became the Highest Paid Athlete

Boxing

These days, Floyd doesn’t just get paid a guaranteed purse like others in the sport, he gets a taste of everything. Anytime somebody buys a Pay Per View, a seat to a live event, a beer, cotton candy, a churro, a poster… he’s getting in on the action.

When you’re at a Mayweather fight, you’re there because of the decades of blood, sweat, and tears that Floyd has put into his career. He’s laid it all on the line for the fans, and he’s put himself in a situation to reap the rewards.

For some context, for Mayweather’s 2013 fight against Canelo Alvarez which set the PPV record for most buys, Floyd earned just over $40,000,000 from his purse, and nearly double that from PPV (Money that would have otherwise gone to his promoter, for the most part.)

After beating Manny Pacquiao, Floyd is well on his way to a billion dollars in career earnings, the vast majority of which comes after he struck out on his own, making the pivot from boxer to boxing entrepreneur.

It could easily be called one of the best business moves an athlete has ever made.
