How Fantasy MMA Works and MMA Betting

Fantasy MMA

Betting on MMA can make you feel like you’re right there inside of the octagon for those big fights, and it can even make the earliest of prelims a lot more exciting. When you understand what you’re doing and not just picking fighters at random, you can make some decent coin too. There are always the freak unexpected outcomes like an early stoppage from the ref or the judges screwing up (Not so unexpected…), but that’s not really an issue when you play Fantasy MMA because it works differently than traditional MMA betting sites.

Building your Fantasy MMA Team

You start with a fixed budget, then you build your roster of fighters for any given event. Each fighter has a salary, so you’ve got to make sure  you can afford the team you put together. As a rule of thumb, the underdog / the fighter that’s expected to score less points (More on points in a second…) is going to cost you less money to draft, so on the flipside you’ll end up paying a pretty penny if you want to pick the favorites. It’s rare that there aren’t at least a few surprise upsets on a card, so try your best to predict them and you’ll have more room on your roster for the easier picks. For example, on DraftKings you start with $50,000 and you’re able to pick 5 fighters from a card. You’ll win some cash if you can pick 5 fighters that are going to score a lot of points. Here’s how that works…

How Fantasy MMA is Scored

It’s not just about who wins or loses the fight with Fantasy MMA. For example, if there’s a guy who is known for getting off tons of significant strikes, or a wrestler who’s great at taking the fight to the ground and advancing position, that can make them a great pick. Let’s use Draftkings as an example again, here’s how their scoring system works… How they score different moves and events

  • Significant Strikes: +0.5 PTS
  • Advancing position: +1 PT
  • Takedown: +2 PTS
  • Reversal/Sweep: +2 PTS
  • Knockdown: +3 PTS

Fight-outcome bonuses

  • 1st Round Win: +100 PTS
  • 2nd Round Win: +70 PTS
  • 3rd Round Win: +50 PTS
  • 4th Round Win: +40 PTS
  • 5th Round Win: +40 PTS
  • Decision Win (WBD+) : +25 PTS

This is all scored by the official Fightmetric numbers. They’re are a group of nerds in a big room somewhere watching fights in slow-motion. Tips for winning your fantasy MMA bets Like any type of gambling, you’re going to be taking a risk but you can greatly reduce that risk simply by knowing a bit about the sport and how different fighters are going to match up. Remember, styles make fights. Since you’re competing against other fans, all you’ve got to do is be slightly above the average and to stick with it. You’ll have a rough event here and there, but in the long run it’ll all even out and if you’re pretty good at picking fights you can make more than enough for beer money. Brock Lesnar ufc
To give you an example how a bit of knowledge can go a long way, Joe Rogan has mentioned on his podcast numerous times how one of his friends in particular likes to wager on MMA fights and Joe can predict who’s going to win MOST of the time. Not just more often than not, but most of the time Joe’s buddy is making dough with his picks. Now, Joe’s called more fights than most people will ever see in their lifetime, but with Fantasy MMA you don’t have to beat Rogan – you just have to beat the average MMA fan and that’s why we love it and so will you.

DraftKings Fantasy MMA Review

Straight up, we really liked DraftKings. We played for UFC 182 and despite our picks not doing so well (Marquardt really disappointed us) we found the interface and usability top notch. It was their first time running a live fantasy MMA event and we were impressed by the site design and performance. (We really pay attention to this kind of stuff, if you’re playing with real money we want to be using a site that runs as a well oiled machine.) The other competitors can’t compete because they don’t have the massive R&D and engineering budget a site like DraftKings has because they are bolstered by their massive NFL contests. Honestly it makes the prelim fights more interesting and you’re going to consistently win money if your picks are better than the average MMA fan. Check out DraftKings, where you can Play Fantasy MMA for cash by drafting 5 fighters from future UFC events.
