Conor McGregor will face UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. Not only will he face dos Anjos, but he will be competing for the UFC LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE. Not only THAT, but he will NOT be vacating the UFC featherweight title.
That is absolutely huge. The UFC was visibly upset with McGregor’s calls to compete for the lightweight title after UFC 194, with Dana White calling for McGregor to vacate the featherweight title on the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show. The fact McGregor was able to get this fight at all is a testament to how much power he has in the UFC right now.
Who else misses this guy?
What’s more interesting that that, though, are the legacy ramifications for McGregor if he can win. Just two people have held titles in two different UFC weight classes (B.J. Penn, who was welterweight champion and then lightweight champion, and Randy Couture, who was heavyweight champion, then light heavyweight champion) and NOBODY has ever held two UFC titles at the same time.
