American Marine Uses Martial Arts to Overcome PTSD

MMA

In just three years of training, Robert Consulmagno has climbed the ranks and earned himself the #1 world ranking in NO GI and #3 in GI. He’s won 13 gold medals, 6 silvers, and one bronze. He trains out of Balance Studios of Philadelphia, and has a whole stable of other top-tier BJJ players in his corner.

He’s pushing for funding to help other former soldiers to find and practise BJJ as a way to combat their PTSD.

“Former soldiers who may have outbreaks, they go to the hospital and instead of the doctor automatically trying to put you on meds, instead he may offer alternative programs such as Jiu-jitsu,” says Consulmagno in an interview with NJ.com.

Currently, he’s working on earning his blackbelt but his number one mission is to motivate and support other marines and to be an example to them, showing them that they can overcome their struggles, or at least find a healthier and more productive way to manage them.

“I want to infect people with positivity,” he said. “For veterans and others who are in my same shoes, you can overcome.”
