Even though no one has signed any contacts yet, the UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg could face off with Amanda Nunes the bantamweight champ at the champion vs. title bout at some point this year, according to Dana White .
In a Yahoo! Sports interview, Dana White said he wants the promotion to happen and particularly wants respect for Cyborg’s next opponent.
“First of all, Amanda Nunes wants to fight with her . Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg. That is the fight that needs to be fought and that is the fight that I will make. That’s the fight” White said.
“Amanda Nunes is a big hitter, strong and powerful. I think it matches Cyborg very well , too, I think it’s a fun fight. That is the fight that needs to be done.”
Nunes had previously thrown around the idea of fighting against Cyborg out of respect for not facing another Brazilian, but she seems to have changed her mind with the possibility of becoming the first two division champion in the history of women in the UFC. In addition, it makes sense for Nunes, who currently does not have a contender to face in the UFC after Raquel Pennington suffered a broken leg that left her out of action for several months.
Meanwhile, White expects the fight to take place officially sooner rather than later.
“Cyborg wants to fight, so we’ll give him a fight as soon as we can, as soon as Amanda can prepare and prepare for this fight,” White said. “We are ready to do it.”
