What’s Next For Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo?

MMA

After Conor’s swift KO of Jose Aldo, many hardcore fans are calling for an immediate rematch. They’re citing the example of Ronda vs Holm. If Ronda gets an instant rematch, why shouldn’t Jose?

It comes down to the numbers. Conor vs anybody is a huge draw. Jose vs anybody except Conor isn’t a huge draw. So now that Dana White had his wish come true and Conor McGregor won and he’s finally got a marketable champion at 145, he doesn’t want to risk the cash cow by giving Aldo an instant rematch when he can put Conor against anybody else and still get big numbers. If Jose were to win the rematch, the featherweight division becomes a tough sell again.

There’s talk of both fighters moving up to 155. Dana White has said that if Conor McGregor moves up to 155, he would get an instant title shot against the winner of next week’s Cowboy vs RDA bout. Conor has said that if he moves up, he wouldn’t be vacating his belt. So Conor could potentially hold two belts in two weight classes at the same time. If the UFC would allow that to happen for anybody, it would be Conor.

If Jose doesn’t get a rematch, he’ll probably end up moving up as well, and there are a lot of good fights for him at 155. If the fight with McGregor was an epic battle or had even lasted longer, Jose’s star power would have gone up a lot but unfortunately getting trash talked for a year then getting KO’d in seconds doesn’t do a lot to build his name, even thought he had been dominant for a decade.

Here’s what happens next right from the horse’s mouth, but we all know to take this with a grain of salt.

Dana White: If Conor moves up, it’s Jose vs Frankie, if Conor stays its Conor vs Frankie and Jose fights someone else to move back up.
