Ever wondered what would happen if MMA became a team sport? It’s looking like a real possibility.

That doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing Ronda and Manny vs Miesha and Floyd anytime soon, but it looks like 2vs2 MMA bouts are closer than you’d think.

There's already MMA with teams, but it's a complete shitshow. 2 on 2 actually still resembles a fight.

There’s already MMA with teams, but it’s a complete shitshow. 2 on 2 actually still resembles a fight.

At a recent conference for the Association of Boxing Commissions in California (The folks who are responsible for keeping combat sports safe and stopping it from turning into some kind of ridiculous spectacle), a man gave a presentation about bringing 2-on-2 MMA fights to America.

The 2 on 2 MMA fights have been going on in Russia for years, and they look like something out of American Gladiator, except way more hardcore.

They were ahead of their time.

They were ahead of their time.

These fights have been shown on Axs TV in America the past, but they were just older events from Russia dubbed over in English.

You would expect that the people tasked with regulating combat sports would see this and immediately laugh the guy out of the room, but the presentation actually went really well. Andy Foster is the executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, and here are his thoughts on 2 vs 2 mma:

“I thought he was well-prepared,” Foster said. “His video was quite good. And I thought it was almost comical watching it. I mean, have you ever seen this thing?”

Casey Oxendine, the man campaigning to bring 2on2 MMA to California, compares his quest to the moon landing:

This is the Patriot who's going to make 2on2 MMA happen for America.

“[The moon landing] was monumental,” he said in an interview with Ben Fowlkes for MMAJunkie. “We are monumental in the exact same way.”

Having four guys beat the shit out of each other on a multi-level obstacle course is definitely monumental in the exact same way as man landing on the moon.

Since this promotion already exists, we don’t have to imagine what it would look like, we can see it for ourselves, and you’re probably dying to see it by now.
