No, McGregor is not like Ali. Ali was the top name in boxing for over a decade, and is also regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all times. McGregor, unlike Ali, has never been seen as the top fighter in his sport (and he probably won’t be unless Jon Jones comes back from his suspension worse for wear).
And of course, that doesn’t speak to Ali’s importance as a figure in the Civil Rights Movement, his anti-war stance during the Vietnam War, or his status as a pop culture icon of the 1960s and 1970s.
McGregor is doing some great things, both as a fighter and as a self-promoter, but comparisons to Ali are crazy. Comparisons to Michael Jordan are even crazier, though!
