Who’s Next for Jon Jones?

Articles

There’s no denying that the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion is one bad dude. Most of the champs are bad dudes for that matter (Except Ronda). We’ve seen Jones show some heart in the past, but never for more than a few fleeting moments at a time in what’s been a dominating career thus far. After seeing Jones almost lose to Sonnen via Toe, his mortality was highlighted in his next title defense against Alexander Gustaffson which some people actually thought could have gone to the challenger. Up next on Jon’s calendar is a romp with Glover, and depending on how other things play out, quite possibly a hugely-anticipated rematch with Gus.

Jon has even talked about moving up to the Heavyweight division to take on Cain, but with that being upwards of a year away from now, we have some other ideas of possible matchups for Jon “Bones” Jones in 2014.

Matt Hamil

Jones deserves a chance to avenge his one loss, to prove to the world that he can beat The Hammer without cheating. Jones has been ducking Matt for years, obviously, since Hamil is the only one to crack the code so far. You can say that Jones lost the fight rather than Matt winning it, but let’s be real – if Matt’s head wasn’t in the perfect place to catch those illegal elbows, he wouldn’t have pulled the W against the future GOAT. None of Jones other opponents have been able to achieve the perfect head position in order to get the DQ victory, so you’ve got to give Matt props. We would love to see these two go head to head again, maybe The Hammer can position himself to catch a few blatant eye pokes or a kick in the junk.

Hendo

UFC 151, the fight that never was. Dan Henderson pulled out due to an injury, Jones refused to fight Sonnen on short notice, and Hendo’s gone 0-3 ever since against guys that Jones has beat. This has all the makings of a huge PPV event and a legendary title fight. Wait, no it doesn’t. Nevermind.

Pat Barry

A lot of people are sleeping on Pat Barry just because he’s 4-7 in the UFC and just got cut, but he poses a terrible stylistic match-up for Jones. We’ve done the MMA Math and Pat Barry is the ideal guy to take on Jones. He’s under six feet tall, has a shorter reach by nearly an entire foot, and is a good 5 or 6 inches shorter too. We’ve seen how Jones fared against someone his own size, but would Jones be able to adapt so quickly so someone with such a smaller  reach? This is what makes Pat Barry the wild card.. The … The Bone Collector.. Chances are this fight won’t get made, since the UFC wouldn’t want to risk anymore superstars losing their spotlight after manipulating the media to turn on Ronda, paying Silva to take another dive and letting GSP’s opponents get high and take PEDs.

Who did we miss?

It’s unlikely that there’s anyone else who deserves to be mentioned here as a potential opponent for Jon Jones, but if you think we missed anyone (you’re probably wrong) just leave a comment below…
