WATCH: Fighter Tries To Get Flashy, Gets STARCHED Instead

Articles

That’s never a fun way to go out, and we don’t want to pile on, but this should serve as a good lesson to fighters. If you’re doing something that’s working, keep doing it. You want to avoid those small opportunities where your opponent could pounce and change the tide of the fight, just ask Chael Sonnen or Chris Weidman, who both were doing great in title fights before uncharacteristic flashy spinning moves drastically changed the tides of battle.

On the other hand, you would never tell someone like Yair Rodriguez to fight conservatively, but that’s becasue the flashy spinnin’ shit is his MO, he’s got it down pat, and its as much as part of his game as a jab or footwork.

Sometimes, keeping your opponent on their toes is the way to go, other times you’re better off doing what works… Surprises can change the whole fight, but not always in your favor.

There was some question as to whether this was an illegal strike to the head against a downed opponent, but if you watch the video closely you can see that the knee landed before he hit the ground, plus he basically threw his head and the guy’s knee. h/t CSF
