Vitor Belfort Just Called Out CM Punk For His Retirement Fight

Articles

It’s nice when the UFC has a chance to cast their legends off on a positive note, for example Hendo getting one last crack at the strap. Even if you disagree with the title shot, it’s cool that he got the opportunity even if it wasn’t the fight that made the most sense. It’s like a nod of the hat. Well, Vitor wants to take it a step further…

Vitor suffered a tough loss to Gastelum recently, and it was one of those ‘passing of the guard’ fights. The legend lays down his sword, and the young gun picks it up. Vitor’s got one more in him, and it’ll be his retirement fight, but he knows he’s not looking for another tough outing against one of the top guys in the division, he’s looking for more of a fun fight, here’s the quote:

“It would have to be an interesting fighter, but not a top fighter”, Belfort said. “I’ve been fighting good guys before: Dan Henderson, Weidman, Dan Henderson, ‘Jacaré’, Mousasi and now Kelvin . These are all hard fights, so if you can book a smoother fight… What’s the name of that guy from WWE? CM Punk would be a good fight”, Belfort laughed. “CM Punk, let’s get it on. That would be a really good fight.”

Vitor has also expressed interest in an “old timers” league, with fighters who are past their prime but still big draws, who can still compete and beat a lot of people, just not necessarily the top 5 in the weight class. In a promotion like the UFC, there’s a point where they’re not really in title contention anymore, but they still sell tickets and have huge fan bases and put on good fights, and they get fed to younger fighters either as a test to see where the new guys are at, or as a way to build their name. Instead, Vitor would like to see these guys competing against each other in some sort of legacy league. Would you watch?
