This is the kind of situation where you really want to hear the full story, what was she saying to him that got him so angry? It sounds like she was in his way, but he started lifting right next to her anyways, and she probably made a comment. He would have already been steaming at the fact that she was stretching in the wrong place, so that provocation was what he was waiting for.
