UFC 172 Recap And Why Jones Might Be The GOAT

Articles

It was a great night of fights over in Maryland and the MMA Tiger team was in the crowd to soak up all the action. Next time, we might accept the press passes but with a card like this, why would you want to be stuck in some press box when you can be right in the middle of it all with the fans?

The Main Event – Jones vs Teixeira

The talks of Jones being the greatest MMA fighter of all time are really starting to gain validity. The hype train slowed down a bit after the Gus fight, there are still people out there who think Gus won it but they really need to watch it again. Jones has beat tougher opponents than anyone else has, and he’s beaten them more dominantly. As Cheal Sonnen said after his fight with Jones, it’s one thing to beat someone but to beat them at their own game is a whole new level of domination.
Everyone expected Jones to use his reach advantage and to keep the distance as Teixeira would push forward to get into boxing range, but Jones was happy to stay in the pocket, noting that his hand-fighting was far superior to Glover’s. Jones won the fight handily, not giving up a single round to Teixeira.

Co-Main – Johnson vs Davis

This marks the week that Phil Davis learned how to sell a fight, unfortunately it wasn’t his own. He seemed too preoccupied talking shit about Jones, and just got completely picked apart by Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who finally made his way back to the UFC after being cut for not making weight. Phil Davis, like many high-level wrestlers, isn’t necessarily known for exciting fights but his wrestling was completely shrugged-off by a motivated Rumble, who really looked like he’s finally met his full potential. Anthony Johnson achieved a clear victory and immediately added his name into contender talks, while simultaneously taking Phil Davis out of the picture for now.
