Sonnen Hedging His Bets, Calls Out Rich Franklin

Articles

Chael knows his big fights are numbered. With TRT gone, and already in the autumn of his career, he’s not about to let Wanderlei waste his time or to go through a tough training camp for nothing. With Wandy humming and hawwing to get the contract signed to fight Sonnen, and showing up to work late and drunk, there’s no doubt this fight is in trouble. The 12 of us that subscribe to Fight Pass and are keeping up with TUF Brazil 3 have already seen Sonnen beat Wanderlei in a fight once and despite sucker punches to the back of the head from one of  Wanderlei’s coaches, Chael still ended up in the dominant position, likely a preview of how their real fight would end up.

Sonnen’s Guide To Getting Rich Quick

Never one to sit around and let things fall into place on their own, Sonnen’s taken to Twitter to secure another big name opponent for himself. No, it’s not Anderson Silva or Jon Jones this time, it’s a school teacher from Ohio. It’s been about a year since we’ve seen the 39 year old Rich Franklin in the Octagon, but none the less this would be a great fight between two old school middleweights who have a couple common opponents but have never stepped into the cage facing one another. Frankly, I’m a bit more excited for this potential fight than for Chael vs Wandy, but it’s unclear if this is a replacement for Wanderlei or if Sonnen’s just continuing to look one fight ahead. That didn’t work out too well for him against Rashad, so we’ll see what happens.

As you may know, Rich Franklin has gotten into the juice business and he’s doing gangbusters. Earlier this year, Franklin turned down a fight against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to keep focusing on his juice business, in other words “Give me a more relevant opponent if you want me to get back into that cage, I want to get paid.” Let’s hope Rich Franklin hasn’t gotten too used to the easy life, because selling overpriced juice to housewives in Beverly Hills is a far stretch from standing across the cage from The American Gangster.
