With their orange robes, shaved heads and deep stances, Shaolin kung fu is one of the most identifiable styles in martial arts. Heck, if you asked a random person on the streets what a martial artist looks like, there’s a decent chance they’d probably give a vague description of a Shaolin monk.
Because of all the perceived mysticism and the pop culture attention given to the Shaolin monks, it’s easy to dismiss them as all sizzle and no steak. Not so! Sit, children, as I tell you the tale of the Shaolin’s battle against Japanese pirates in the 16th century.
