Any time somebody new hits the scene in a big way, two opposite phenomenons occur…
First of all, the hype train begins speeding down the track with Dana in the conductor’s seat. It’s exciting to see new talent emerging, and fun to imagine them being the next big thing.
Secondly, you’ve got the people trying to hop the train and derail it, who refuse to give anybody credit until they’ve cleared the division three times without breaking a sweat.
Sage Northcutt exploded onto the scene for his UFC debut and finished his opponent in under a minute. For those in the first group, this performance confirmed what they already knew. For the second group, they had all sorts of reasons that it wasn’t really a big deal.
In this Gracie Breakdown video, the man himself breaks down his performance in his UFC debut against Francisco Trevino. Hearing Sage explain every movement and every nuance of the fight demonstrates that it was far from a fluke or a lucky break. Every move was calculated.
