It’s never a good idea to start a fight with a Gracie. Their family pioneered one of the most effective hand-to-hand combat techniques, and they’re not afraid to throw down at any opportunity. Rickson Gracie, for example, has an unofficial record of 400-0 and only 11 of those fights were sanctioned.
In 2014, Renzo was arrested after being charged with gang assault for sending a bouncer to the hospital. Point is, the entire family has a reputation of being people you don’t want to mess with.
Here’s what happened when Renzo was at a house party and he got attacked by a wild gang of catch wrestlers…
The Gracie kids grew up on the mean streets of Brazil, and Renzo explains that it was a different time back then. You had to fight for what you wanted, and you had to fight to stop people from taking what’s yours.
Renzo Gracie, grandnephew of Hélio and 1st cousin once removed of Royce (The Gracie family tree is more like a forest), was only 16 years old the first time he was shot. He had been shot at multiple times since the age of 14, but nothing hit him until he was 16.
Random house party.
At a 15 year old’s birthday party, Renzo was there with his BJJ friends and they ran into a group of guys who were into luta livre (a style of catch wrestling).
A vicious fight broke out at the party. Broken bottles and glass all over the place. All of Renzo’s friends had been knocked out, and he had to defend them. The way he tells it, he’s defending the KO’d bodies of his friends from a bunch of guys, shoving them away, when all of a sudden one of them pulls out a gun…
That kid shot Renzo, then booked it. Renzo was chasing after him with broken glasses in both hands. His leg gave out, but Renzo kept chasing the kid while hopping on one leg. The guy unloaded the rest of his bullets, but missed.
