Here’s what he said:
“I think that title thing is a fairytale man. All these guys are like, ‘I want the belt. I want to be the champion.’ But, the best fighters in the world are getting paid the best money. And, you know, that belt thing as far as I’m concerned is a fairy tale. That might piss a lot of people off, but you know I’m saying money talks. And, if the best fighters aren’t getting paid the most money, then why are they getting paid that money for?”
Nate Diaz has been getting a lot of big media attention lately.
He didn’t put it elegantly…but he’s spot on. Urijah Faber was paid more by the UFC for his fights than Renan Barao, a long-reigning champion, ever was. While Barao held the title, it did nothing for his paycheck, for why should he, or Diaz, care about holding the UFC title? The same goes for Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, Demetrious Johnson…all champions that never made more money off that fact.
Yup, this is apparently happening.
While Diaz could probably make a decent check with a title fight against Robbie Lawler or Rafael dos Anjos, he’s probably going to rematch Conor McGregor at UFC 200. And you know what? If that makes him the most money, that’s precisely what he should do.
