Nate Diaz Is Training For Rumored Fight Against Tyron Woodley For 170 Belt

Articles

By the sounds of it, Nate Diaz is going to be hanging out at 170 again, with a fight against Tyron Woodley. The reports are that it’s not 100% set in stone yet, but we’ve heard that Woodley is preparing for an opponent outside of the top 15 at Welterweight, and that Nate also also been training for a yet-unnamed opponent.

This would be for a card that is 6 weeks away and still missing the main event. According to Ariel Helwani who initially teased at this rumor, and then followed it up with a little bit more confirmed that the fight is in the works, there are a number of other possibilities of fights that could take place instead.

It seems strange for the UFC to be sending Nate directly to a title fight at 170, but it’s also a pretty transparent move when you think about it. The UFC might be hoping that Nate gets the upset here, wins the 170 belt, and then the UFC can either book the trilogy between Conor and Nate for the 170lb belt, or even bring GSP into the picture. They probabally see Nate as a winnable fight for GSP, which opens up the door for GSP to regain his 170 belt, and then the red carpet is laid out perfectly for Conor vs GSP at 170 in the biggest MMA fight of all time. Or, as an alternative, Woodley takes down Diaz, and the UFC has more leverage in contract negotiations for Diaz vs McGregor 3.

It’s all just speculation at this point, but if any of your predictions are correct you’ll win some bragging rights, and that’s always good.

Nate’s coach posted to social media revealing that Nate was training for an upcoming fight, before promptly deleting the message, which only further sparks rumors that there is a big announcement coming up. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
