FightState’s New MMA Rules for 2014

Articles

We’re going to start off the new year by giving back to the MMA community by helping fix one of the biggest problems that exists in mixed martial arts and that’s, of course, the judging. The point isn’t to point fingers or blame incompetent judges, that’s been done enough and it hasn’t gotten any positive results yet. The judges are just working with the tools they’ve been given, the real problem is trying to use a 10-point must scoring system when it just doesn’t make sense for MMA. This scoring system is a relic of the days when MMA had to cozy up next to boxing to help gain legitimacy in the eyes of lawmakers. Take Jesus for example, he’s probably the greatest carpenter of all time but I wouldn’t want him to install my new cabinets using plastic tools he borrowed from Bob the Builder. So, we’ve got to give the MMA judges better tools to work, and since everyone is complaining but nobody is going anything about it – we decided to step up to the plate.

Dear Athletic Commissions of America,

We are officially proposing a new scoring system for mixed martial arts in America, with the hope that governing bodies from around the world will adopt it due to your influence. As such, and as industry experts, here is our list of suggestions for a new scoring system in MMA.

This new system would replace the current 10-point must system that’s in use. Instead, both fighters would begin the fight with 0 points, with the ability to earn points in the following ways.

New Point System

  • 1 point awarded to the fighter who makes it to the center of the octagon first.
  • 1 point awarded to the fighter with the greater amount of Twitter followers.
  • 2 points awarded automatically to the champ in a title fight. (Refer to GSP vs Hendricks.)
  • 2 points awarded for best pre-fight press conference performance.
  • 3 points awarded for each successful noogie.
  • 3 points awarded for loudest crowd reaction at walk-out.
  • 4 points awarded for Showtime-style off-the-cage kicks to the head.
  • 5 points for giving  your opponent sexual gratification after a knockout. (It’s just good sportsmanship.)

The winner is the fighter who gets closest to 14 points without going over. If you go over, your points start counting backwards until you’re back at 0 and you have to start again.

Other Rule Changes

  • Tables and chairs are now legal.
  • Hammerfists banned in Women’s MMA, to be replaced with clawing and scratching.
  • Now legal to kick downed opponents in the head.
  • All fights scheduled must now take place between a tattooed fighter and a non-tattooed fighter.
  • No rounds, no time limits. The fight continues until there is a winner.

Notes

These rules might sound a bit unorthodox, but they’re still better than the current system. As we reported yesterday, the NSAC is taking these into strong consideration, and that’s all we can really say at the moment due to a gag-order that was issued yesterday morning.
