Jose Aldo Refuses To Retire Without Getting a Rematch Against Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is chasing after Nate Diaz right now, but Jose Aldo is still chasing after Conor McGregor. The former featherweight champ is still sore over getting pasted in 13 seconds at UFC 193 and losing his title and he wants his rematch…one way or another.

Speaking with the assembled media in Rio de Janeiro for a press event to promote UFC 200, Aldo said that he won’t stop fighting until he gets a second crack at McGregor. Here are the money quotes, courtesy of MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz (and slightly modified to actually be proper English):

“We’ll catch him in the street. No matter how, we will fight. F–k it…As long as he’s in the UFC, this fight will happen. That’s a fact. We will get the belt back and be champion again. We’ll move up. The UFC will do this fight. It doesn’t matter at which weight. I don’t care.”

Aldo is in a precarious position these days. Despite the fact that he was regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world from 2010 to 2015, Aldo was a drag at the box office, and failed to resonate with fans. Add to that his injury history and the fact that it dragged his feud with McGregor out for an incredibly long time, and the UFC and McGregor had very little financial incentive to bring Aldo back into the title hunt.

He has a big fight at UFC 200, though, against Frankie Edgar. They fought once before in 2013 with Aldo taking a unanimous decision after a competitive fight. The winner here will get an interim title for their efforts, which could be elevated to the undisputed title, if McGregor leaves the featherweight division permanently.

Hopefully we do get the fight (in the Octagon, of course). The first fight was an amazing sight, but Aldo was an accomplished champion and it was a bit disappointing that the UFC 193 event ended so quickly.

Either way, Aldo is going to have to wait for the fight for a good, long while.
