Jose Aldo Announces his Retirement Plan

Articles

Jose Aldo intends to compete in MMA for the second last fight at UFC 237, where he will face off in battle with Alex Volkanovski. Then Aldo will have one more fight, the former UFC featherweight champion that he plans on fulfilling as his last obligation. Aldo will then cross over to the sport of boxing.

My plan is to fight Alexander Volkanovski on May 11, Then I’ll have only one fight left in my [UFC] contract, which I plan to have. But I already have another thing in mind: boxing” Aldo told ESPN.

I want to push myself. I’m not here for a specific match. I won’t call anyone out. I want to start from the bottom, really push myself, get ranked and who knows … fight for the title one day. Of course, my name already puts me ahead of lots of guys.”

However, before Jose Aldo migrates over to boxing as Conor at one point seems to be doing, would like to go out with a big UFC title fight one last time. Notwithstanding the UFC will be hesitant to give him a title fight if he has no more fight in his contract. We suspect this is due to the that he would not be able to defend the title. However, this should not be an issue for Dana White has Conor McGregor did not defend his title at one point. However, Aldos seems willing to compromise and will be opening to signing a new contract to get over this issue so long as he i allowed to box at the same time.

They’ll never let me fight for the title if I don’t have any fights left in my contract,” Aldo said.

Everything is about the negotiation. We are open to discuss,” Aldo said. “We can always have a conversation and try to find the best possible way to do it. I don’t see a problem in [re-signing with the UFC and being able to box]. I don’t see myself fighting MMA elsewhere but the UFC.”

What do you think the future holds for Jose Aldo as his UFC 237 fight with Alex Volkanovski draws ever closer? Would he retire sooner if he lost to Volkanovski?
