Could Jon Jones Replace Joe Silva After He’s Done Fighting?

Articles

It appears Jon Jones is having so much fun trying to pick and choose his fights that he might want to make a career out of it someday. Joe Silva has been the UFC’s matchmaker.. well.. forever, and he’s been responsible for putting together some of the most amazing fights in MMA history. None the less, all good things must come to an end and someday, Joe Silva will have to step down, leaving room for a new matchmaker to take his place.

Who’s More Qualified?

When you’re looking to fill big shoes like Joe’s, you can’t pick just anyone. You need to find somebody who has enough experience, and when it comes to matchmaking – few have as much practice as the current Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who’s been doing it for years.

The one man who was able to make Jones look mortal is Alexander Gustaffson, who had the following to say about Jones’ career in matchmaking…

If I look at Jones’ perspective I don’t think that’s strange, because he tries to avoid me,” Gustafsson said in an interview with BT Sport. “Everyone can see that. I can see that. He does what it takes to not fight me. For myself, it doesn’t make any sense. I think DC is a great fighter. I respect him and I think he’s a top contender, but I think he has to have another fight or two before he will fight for the title. The only thing that makes sense, in my mind, is me versus Jones next.

But In Fairness To The Champ…

It’s not like Jones is calling out unranked guys, he just thinks the guys at the top of his division should have to knock each-other off first to see who really deserves the title shot. There are people who arguably say that Gus won against Jones, and after a stellar performance against Manuwa, it’s hard to argue against Gus getting another shot at the champ ASAP. Of course, that depends on Jones getting past Glover Teixeira which is far from a certainty.
