Jake Gyllenhaal Got Ripped For His New Boxing Movie “Southpaw”

Still more fight training than C.M. Punk…

“I just trained like a boxer,” said Gyllenhaal. “As you learn the skills, that stuff just happens in your mind and in your body. We shot the fights in the first two weeks of the movie, so I trained for basically five months up to those fights. We shot four fights in a row.”

Long gone are Jake’s days of being known for his role as the lil weirdo Donnie Darko, he’s swole for his new role as Billy Hope in the new movie Southpaw. Boxing movies can be hit or miss, but this one looks good. It’s written by a guy who worked on Sons of Anarchy and The Shield and another guy who worked on The Expendables 2 and The Mechanic, so it could be an interesting mix. Southpaw is directed by Antoine Fuqua who’s known for movies like Training Day, Tears of the Sun, Shooter, and the upcoming Suge Knight documentary.

Here’s what the film’s director had to say…

“I think he broke up with his girlfriend because he was just in the gym every day. He was training like a fighter. I had him sparring, really getting hit. No one but fighters understand the sacrifice it takes to be a fighter.”
