Here’s Everything You Missed at UFC Fight Night: Vegas

MMA

The UFC’s International Fight Week (TM) kicked off on Thursday night with a bang. While the card has largely been forgotten about with all the news of Brock Lesnar being added to the show (and all the drama that brings) and Jon Jones ruining the main event by failing a drug test, it ended up being pretty fun. Here are all the highlights:

There is a New Lightweight Champ!

Eddie Alvarez’s Cinderella run to the UFC title is now complete. Few gave the Bellator champ a chance against the fearsome Rafael dos Anjos but, as he so often does, Alvarez proved all his doubters wrong by knocking dos Anjos out in the first round. Notes:

  • Alvarez has an amazing story and, with how many big wins he has to his name, it’s hard to say he isn’t one of the greatest fighters of all time. Wins over RDA, Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez? How can you question that?
  • Dos Anjos was crushed by the loss. Not only did he lose the belt, but he also loses out on that big money fight with Conor McGregor.
  • Alvarez, smartly, called out McGregor after the fight and there’s a good chance he gets it if he can beat Nate Diaz at UFC 202.

Roy Nelson vs. Derrick Lewis Sucked

While it was billed as guaranteed fireworks, Roy Nelson vs. Derrick Lewis ended the same way most “no way this goes to the judges” fights do. It went to the judges. Nelson grappled with Lewis for much of the fight and did a good enough job to make things boring, but not quite a good enough job to actually win. Notes:

  • The fight went down to a split decision and Lewis likely won in the last 10 seconds by stealing the third round with the extremely hard punch that is up in the lead image spot!
  • Lewis is on a four-fight win streak but still kind of stinks. He got repeatedly taken down and held there by Nelson…and that’s just not good.
  • Roy might officially be a boring fighter at this point. He didn’t even try and land his signature right hand this fight and that’s just not a good sign going forward.

The Best of the Rest

  • The first five fights on the card all ended by submission! Fun!
  • One of those subs came from Gilbert Burns, a BJJ wizard who is 5-1 in the Octagon. Check him out!
  • Joe “The Last Man to Beat Conor McGregor (Before Nate Diaz)” Duffy is back in the win column. He bounced back from his tough loss to Dustin Poirier by submitting Mitch Clarke in 25 seconds.
