Luis Felipe Alvim – 22 years old – became Wélter Weight Champion at Juiz de Fora Fight. Being a champion of an MMA event is something very remarkable, but the circumstances that led hime to win the belt are what make this achievement even more impressive, amazing and remarkable.
Carlos Eduardo Rufino and Claudinei Kall were supposed to fight in 170-pound division belt in Juiz de Fora’s main event Fight 18, but Rufino missed the weight by barely 1 pound. Needless to say it was obvious that Kall was not happy with the situation, although he agreed to enter the cage with a heavier opponent. Nobody knows what he was thinking at the time.
However, coming to his senses at last minute, Kall decided he was not going to compete. Then that is where Alvim enters offering to measure himself against Rufino. Alvim told the story to ‘MMA Fighting’:
Luis Felipe Alvim: “I told Felipe Silva (Alvim’s coach) that I would fight, that I would give the show, but a new fight had already been scheduled. Forty minutes before the main event, a boy became frightened and I was offered the fight again. ”
“He knocked me down a couple of times and hit some hard punches, and I thought, ‘Shit, what the fuck am I doing here?’ When I clicked the triangle, I said to myself, ‘Shit, I’m going to catch it.’ I asked God, ‘Please do not let this round end,’ and then he tapped. ”
