Dustin Poirier to Khabib Nurmagomedov: “I’m going to stop his body from working”

The new interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier, his not mixing his words about his next opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov. Responding to Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, saying he will hurt him during the 25 minutes of their fight. Poirier made this comment while responding during a recent interview with ‘MMAWeekly’. The fighters have recently begun challenging each other and promoting their upcoming unification of the belt bout, due to take place in September in Abu Dhabi.

“This is fighting. I’m going to try to hurt him for 25 minutes. I’m going to try to stop his body from working, That means nothing saying ‘I’m going to maul him’.” Poirier savagely stated about his intentions toward Nurmagomedov his next opponent after UFC 236.

Some people may think that Poirier is going too far as this is a professional fight or that he taking thing too personal about his upcoming fight but Dustin went on to justify why he wants to hurt Nurmagomedov saying “You’re supposed to. I expect the same from him when I say I’m going to hurt him, I expect the same that he’s going to try to hurt me and take me out. That’s what fighting is. We’re not in there playing tennis”. ‘Poirier was responding to comments Khabib had made comment in an interview following UFC St Petersburg last weekend.

Dustin Poirier Able To Fight Khabib Nurmagomedov

Dustin Poirier will now face Khabib after winning a tough battle against Hawaiian Max Hollway, clinching the title belt after UFC 236 on April 13. The fight between the Russian and the American, however, could be held only at the end of the year, when Nurmagomedov will be released from the suspension he is serving after the notorious post-fight brawl last October at UFC 229.

Since returning to action among lightweights in 2015, Poirier has maintained a favorable following in the UFC. With 11 fights, the American came out victorious in nine of them, being defeated in one, and adding a fight with no content. The 30-year-old Dustin has 30 fights overall with 25 wins and five losses.

Khabib Nurmagomedov, on the other hand, remains undefeated as a professional fighter. The Russian has 27 fights and no defeat. Nurmagomedov debuted in Ultimate in 2012 and won the lightweight belt by defeating Irishman Conor McGregor by submission. This fight against McGregor has dogged him since he lost to Khabib with “The Notorious” offering several explanations as to why he lost. He last explanation about his lost to Nurmagomedov was that he had a broken foot several weeks before.

Conor McGregor’s Explanation

Some fans and commentators had criticized the Conor McGregor for his comments as he was trying to save face after his humiliating defeat to Khabib during their fight Conor was choked out and force him to tap out in submission. However, in response to those who think the Irishman is just making excuses he posted this.

McGregor seems to be coming to terms with his loss. Whether Dustin Poirier will suffer a similar fate to the Irishman by the hands of Russian is yet to be seen. However, judging from Poirier last performance against Max Holloway right now it safe to say he is good form and is a respectable rival for Khabib Nurmagomedov.
