There was a time where just about everybody knew who the heavyweight champion was in boxing, and these days there are even fans of combat sports that couldn’t name them. In contract, who hasn’t heard of Ronda Rousey or Conor McGregor over the past 2-3 years? Conor has been taking the world by storm, and the same goes for Ronda before her loss and subsequent disappearance from the public eye.
Someone on reddit added up the numbers, and it’s not just a “feeling” anymore than MMA is rapidly surpassing boxing in popularily, there’s numbers to back it up. In fact, Conor McGregor alone is drawing bigger than boxing by over 2, and nearly three times.
It really helps to show why the UFC is putting so much into this guy, he’s single-handedly giving them the biggest numbers in the business. Can you really blame the UFC for bending over backwards for him? None the less, there’s an on-going power struggle between Conor and the UFC. Like when they took him off of UFC 200 and he announced his retirement, and his retirement tweet got more attention than even Kobe Bryant’s. Conor has been dominating the fight game, and the media.
