Conor McGregor Is Not Getting A Title Shot

Articles

Word on the street for the past couple weeks was that Conor McGregor would be getting a title shot against the winner of Aldo/Mendes on October 25th, but that’s not the case anymore. In a recent tweet, McGregor revealed that he’ll have to get through at least one more competitor before getting a shot at the belt which means the next title shot will likely go to the winner of Cub Swanson vs Frankie Edgar.

Does anyone think they aren’t looking for a victim? This fight is going to be a massive opportunity for somebody because there’s nobody ranked above McGregor that isn’t already tied up in the near future. The champ and Mendes are fighting, Cub and Edgar are fighting, Lamas and Bermudez are fighting, Korean Zombie is out for a couple years due to military service, ufc-featherweight-rankings-2014McGregor just beat Poirier.. which only leaves two guys in the top ten, Lentz and Siver. Over the past week, McGregor and Siver have been going back and forth over Twitter. The UFC wants to give McGregor a well-known opponent, but they don’t want to risk him before he gets that shot at the belt either.

HOWEVER…

Who’s to say he doesn’t change weight classes? If he’s moving up a weight class, fans would be a lot more willing to come to terms with a “gimme’ fight, since it’s easier to justify when the other guy is at their usual weight.

So for everyone who was pissed off that McGregor was getting a title shot so soon, don’t worry about it because he’s not… but it’s unlikely that the hype train will be derailed, either. McGregor is one of the UFC’s fastest growing assets, with Dana White even being quoted as saying that he’s bigger than Lesnar and GSP.  We’ll see…
