It has been a crazy last few days, and a big part of that is because of the surprising announcement that Brock Lesnar is returning to the UFC at UFC 200. While the announcement gave a when (July 9, 2016), a where (Las Vegas, NV) and a how from the WWE…it didn’t have a “who” as in “who would Lesnar be fighting?”
Well, we got the answer to that on Monday. Speaking with SportsCenter on Monday morning, Lesnar revealed that he would be facing off with New Zealand’s finest, Mark Hunt. Here’s what he said to Hannah Storm (h/t MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi for putting it into text):
“Why not? It could be anybody. I didn’t care. If Dana White called me and said, ‘You have opponent X, Y, and Z, who do you want?’ He never gave me those options. This is the guy that we want you to face, I said, ‘Great. This is what I’m going to do.'”
While Lesnar is confident that he’ll beat anybody, he probably shouldn’t be quite so cocky when it comes to Hunt. The Super Samoan is one of the sport’s greatest knockout artists, known for his legendary “walk-off” style knockouts, where he lands a single punch, walks away and lets the referee wave the fight off as they struggle to get back up. While Lesnar is a bad matchup for him, given his legitimate wrestling credentials, Hunt knocked out Roy freakin’ Nelson. He can absolutely smash Lesnar to pieces.
The Lesnar vs. Hunt bout takes place in the co-main event spot of UFC 200. I’m excited, are you?
