The night of June 23rd, 1947.

Sugar Ray Robinson, the reigning welterweight champion of the world at the time, laid down in search of some quality rest. After all, the following day he would be defending his welterweight title against 22 year old challenger Jimmy Doyle (real name James Emerson Delaney) at the Cleveland Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Robinson eventually drifted off into sleep — a sleep that would soon be interrupted. Sugar Ray Robinson, many of whom to this day consider the best pound for pound boxer the sport has ever witnessed, had a dream that night.

Or a nightmare, rather.

By the time Robinson had awoken, he had a premonition in his sleep where he had visualized the death of his upcoming opponent, Jimmy Doyle. But it wasn’t just the death of Doyle that Robinson had visualized. It was also who caused it.

Himself.

The vision that night he had in his sleep was so vividly framed that Robinson could even remember the exact shot that ended his opponent’s life — a left hook.
