Name That MMA Fighter

  • She grew up in a small four mile stretch of farms until she was seventeen, hence one of her nicknames. Can you guess how she got the other one?
  • Her nicknames include “Hottie” and “The Farmer’s Daughter”
  • Her boxing record is 33-2-3, with plenty of championship belts in the mix.
  • She got bit by the fighting bug while watching her brothers wrestle. Those practices are where she came across a class taught by none other than Mike Winkeljohn.
  • She went professional at 20 years old, dropping out of college after realizing she could make some money at this.
  • After her management met with Dana, he said the UFC was “no longer interested”, but it seems like that’s just codeword for “we don’t like her manager.”

If the boxing record didn’t give it away, we’ll clue you in… we’re talking about Holly Holm, who didn’t start training any type of grappling until 2011, despite spending nearly a decade training at an elite MMA gym.

Holly Holm has been training in MMA exclusively since 2013 and with a 6-0 record inside the cage, she could pose a legitimate threat to Ronda Rousey who has yet to fight anyone near Holly’s level of striking. If there’s one part of Ronda’s game that does get criticism, it’s her striking game despite her speedy knockout of Sara McMann recently.

Holly Holm getting some fights in the UFC could have been the huge news that Joe Rogan was referring to recently, before Dana backpedeled and denied any major announcements. Still, if we’ve  learned one thing about MMA over the years it’s that it doesn’t really matter what Dana White says. You can’t use Dana’s words as any type of barometer for what’s going to happen so we would be surprised if Holly Holm wasn’t brought in sooner than later.
