8 Scariest Monsters of MMA

Articles

MMA folklore has a handful of mythical, legendary and monstrous creatures. If you weren’t a fan in the earlier days of the careers of the guys who are starting to hit the autumns of their careers, you might not truly appreciate how epic some of them were. If all you know about Wanderlei Silva is him being a goof for the past couple years, you’re ignorant to one of the scariest guys in MMA history. The same goes for Rampage. The same goes for anyone who tuned into Strikeforce to see the tail end of Fedor’s career but missed him in his prime. The list goes on and on, and we’ve started to compile it below.

Prime Fedor

Like we said already, Fedor had a rough couple of matches at the end of his career but that doesn’t negate his countless years of absolute domination. If you aren’t aware, go check out Fedor’s old fights from Pride. It’s a shame that he and the UFC were never able to work out a deal, it’s one of the bigger tragedies in MMA lore.

Motivated BJ Penn

BJ Penn is one of the most naturally gifted fighters around, and it gets said often because it highlights the fact that BJ Penn doesn’t always seem  to put in a full effort. He’ll fight at heavier weight classes because he doesn’t want to diet or cut, and he’ll just be … off sometimes, especially in his final fight against Frankie Edgar. MMA fans are glad to know that BJ is hanging up his gloves because he’s done plenty for the sport already.

Healthy Shogun

Shogun Rua trains hard, and sometimes he’ll bring those injuries into the cage. It happens to everyone, but Shogun’s had more than his share. Also, he was healthier in his younger days when he was beating the world and being able to soccer kick downed opponents in the head can be a very useful strategy to have.

In-Shape Rampage

Rampage has been plagued with knee troubles, and it’s no fun to do cardio on a bum knee so we won’t hold this against him. None the less, Rampage is another fighter where he just doesn’t seem like he shows up certain nights, for whatever reason. When Rampage is “on”, he’s up there with all of the greats. Problem is,  he isn’t quite “on” as often as he should be. Now that Jackson is back in the UFC with a nice winning streak on his hands, it’ll be interesting to see what he does next.

Serious Anderson Silva

He clowned around, he lost. If only he had taken the fight seriously! /sarcasm

Lucky Chael Sonnen

Chael, on his fight with Shogun: "I got lucky. That was a lucky move. If we would fight ten more times, I would never catch that move again."

Chael, on his fight with Shogun: “I got lucky. That was a lucky move. If we would fight ten more times, I would never catch that move again.”

Not everyone knows that Chael Sonnen beat the champ in WSOF, except his opponent didn’t make weight so it wasn’t considered a title fight. Bad luck! He came so close to beating Anderson Silva that first fight before getting tapped out right at the very end. Thems the breaks! In the rematch, he slipped and fell while trying to throw a spinning elbow at one of the best strikers in the game, and Anderson was already moving out of the way before Chael even initiated the attack.  If Chael had been able to hit a lucky streak during his career, he’d have at least one belt around his waist.

Pride Wanderlei

New fans might think Wanderlei is just a joke, but the dude is no joke. He’s been around the block and been in some all out wars. Before he was acting like a goof on TUF Brazil, Wanderlei was dominating Pride and putting on some of the most exciting fights ever. He might have been KO’d one too many times, and who can blame the man for not being a huge fan of random drug testing…?

Proven Weidman

Beating Anderson Silva twice in a row in half a year isn’t enough to earn respect, at least not if you’re Chris Weidman. A 5-round win over Lyoto Machida? Meh. Time will tell if Weidman is the real deal or not, but how can anyone still be doubting him? One day, after he’s cleared out his division and won a few super fights, maybe we’ll see the Proven Weidman in its natural habitat…

WHO ELSE?
