What’s Next for Cain Velasquez?

Articles

The Heavyweight division in the UFC is kind of a mess right now. You’ve got Cain at the top, miles above his gatekeeper, Junior Dos Santos. JSD is miles above the rest of the pack in his own right, but is anyone really looking forward to yet another Cain vs JDS fight? Maybe someday, but what about in the meantime? JDS has a fight coming up against Stipe in August, and that leaves the Champ looking for a new contender. Here are some possible interesting matchups for Cain Velasques…

Bones Jones

#1 P4P Jon Jones has said he wants a superfight against Cain before the end of 2014. Jones is still facing a hungry division helmed by Glover, a potential rematch with Gus if Manuwa doesn’t get his way, and the usual back and forth with Cormier. Imagine Jones steps up to heavyweight and beats Cain, do you think Cormier would be hitting the PopEyes to bulk his way into a shot to reclaim his former BFF’s belt?

The Reem

If Ovareem wasn’t too busy calling out retired fighters and women, he might be able to put together a run for the strap. There’s some chatter about Ovareem being matched up with JDS, how would that even work? Reem wins, title shot… JDS wins and we have to watch another snuff film of him getting suffocated by Cain for 20 minutes?

Junior Dos Santos

A 4th fight between Junior and Cain really doesn’t make sense right now, but it’s tough to imagine any other heavy weights taking out JDS at this point either. So, in order for someone to get a shot at Velasquez, they’ll have to either beat JDS or leap frog him, the latter being more likely.

Roy Nelson

Roy’s still a few wins away from earning a shot at the champ, but it’s just fun to imagine Dana shitting his pants if Nelson were to actually land one of his haymakers on Cain.

The Winner of Browne vs Werdum

This is the correct answer in terms of who should get the next title shot when Cain is healed. Probably. Maybe not. Who knows, I’m glad I’m not Joe Silva though.

First Thing’s First

Before any of this even matters, Cain Velasquez needs to get healed up. The HW division is so shallow that you can barely even get your feet wet, it needs someone to come along and stir the pot… If not Jones or Lesnar, than who?
