The UFC is what it is because of the stars it has spent years and millions of dollars developing and promoting. In the past year or two, a lot of those stars have been extinguished for one reason or another.
Casual MMA fans don’t really know the difference between a big name or somebody who’s actually talented (Kimbo vs Shamrock pulling nearly 3 million viewers being the shining example), so it can be tough for the UFC to build up new names when there are literally still people asking when Chuck Liddell’s next fight is.
To make matters worse, the UFC’s biggest names have been getting picked off one by one…
Georges St. Pierre – Retired (Sort of? Maybe?)
Anderson Silva – Suspended for steroids
Cain Velazquez – Ran out of breath
Jon Jones – In love with the coco
Along with their most dominant champions, others have also recently fallen…
Everyone starts somewhere, but with a good streak of solid title defences the UFC can work to rebuild a new roster of champions. But not so fast, the new guard are getting picked off one by one, too.
Anthony Pettis – Completely demolished (Mind you he wasn’t nearly as dominant as the rest.)
Carla Esparza – She never defended the belt, but at least Joanna Champion is looking like an absolute killer.
