The Brazilian Guy In Charge Of Ranking Fighters For The UFC Just Moved Conor McGregor To The Bottom Of The P4P List

MMA

There’s a certain aura of mystery around the people who handle the UFC’s official fighter rankings. The panel consists of select members of the media, but most MMA journalists that you’ve heard of are absolutely not interested in being on the panel because it opens up a whole can of worms. So what you’re left with is a bunch of people who don’t even really know MMA or follow it all that closely. It’s essentially a shell game, they follow along with whoever the UFC is trying to hype at the moment. That’s why you’ll see someone like Bethe Correia mysteriously climbing the rankings in the months leading up to her fight with Ronda. There are countless other examples.

Sometimes, the people doing the rankings will go rogue, like Marcelo Russio out of Brazil, who is the MMA editor for a site called Globoesporte. A quick look at his twitter reveals that he’s a huge Jose Aldo fan.

After Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Also in a matter of seconds, Russio moved Conor McGregor DOWN four sports in the rankings, putting him at #15. This goof also moved Frankie Edgar down a spot after Frankie knocked out Chad Mendes in the first round.

“Revenge for Aldo? Nope. Dana’s vindictive and don’t forget public criticism. Aldo will take the strap while McGrecor is champion”  – Russio (Translated by Bing.)

There’s nothing wrong with having a favorite fighter, but if you’re a professional you need to put that aside. When your job is to inform the public about MMA and to represent the sport, you can’t go around being this salty.

Everyone has favorites, but this really takes the piss…

Here is Marcelo’s votes for the rankings following UFC 194.
