TERRIBLE STOPPAGE: Ref Takes Major Heat For Allowing This Fight To Continue

Articles

WOW, one of the fighters in this video must be dating the ref’s sister or something, how did this even happen?

Nobody is under the delusion that boxing or MMA are safe sports. They aren’t. They’re dangerous. Beyond broken bones or dislocated joints, there are real dangers of long-term, permanent brain damage. This is something fighters all know about. Nobody is kidding themselves. When you’re a fighter, you think about this sort of thing, you weigh the risks and rewards and you fight. Does it mean a lower quality of life later on? Sometimes. Research into CTE is still on-going, and since you can only determine if someone had it during their autopsy currently, it’s going to be at least another  generation or two until we have any more conclusive studies. We don’t need studies to tell us that getting punched in the head repeatedly, scrambling your brains, is going to have negative side effects. Again, fighters know this, they know what they’re signing up for, BUT…

They also count on the referee to do their job inside the ring. Just because a fighter says they’re fine to continue, doesn’t mean they are. When they’re walking around like they’ve just done a dozen shots of tequila, it’s time to call it off.

There are some amazing referees in boxing, MMA, and kickboxing. Even the best referees make mistakes, sometimes. Everyone has off nights at work, unfortunatly the consequences of an off-night for a referee can result in unnecessary beatdowns like this:

It’s the guy with the red shirt (maybe the Dr?) who runs up to stop the fight by waving his arms once he realizes that the ref is actually going to let it continue. But it wasn’t soon enough, this poor guy get sent into the shadow realm.

When you check out the video in a second, watch for this guy in the red shirt. You can see that when the ref is talking to the fighting and looking like he might actually continue this fight, the guy leaps up to try to stop it…

He’s trying to get the ref’s attentioning, telling him to STOP THE FIGHT!!!

But it’s too late, the guy’s already out cold on the ground. And the dude in the red shirt looks like the ref the same way we’re all looking at the ref after this.

Casey Greene is the guy who lost this fight, but he had a positive perspective about it on IG:
“Fight didn’t go my way but happy for the challenge and ready to use it to improve,” he wrote on Instagram. “Broken/torn ligaments that separated foot bones in first round and then got caught with some good shots in the second that stopped me. Hard night but it is what it is and I’m ready to improve from it. Heal up and onto the next one. Hungrier than ever! Just a part of this journey.”
