Articles

It’s just one more day away. Are you ready for UFC 173? Let’s take a look at the main card and some media leading up to the event in Vegas. To start with, here are  the 5 fights that’ll be shown on PPV. You can catch the prelims on TV and the early prelims on Fight Pass as usual. Our picks are in green. Think you  can do better? Leave a comment at the bottom with your picks.

Bantamweight     Renan Barão     vs.     T.J. Dillashaw
Light Heavyweight     Daniel Cormier     vs.     Dan Henderson
Welterweight     Robbie Lawler     vs.     Jake Ellenberger
Bantamweight     Takeya Mizugaki     vs.     Francisco Rivera
Lightweight     Jamie Varner     vs.     James Krause

Look out for…

  • This is a hugely underrated PPV, the top 3 fights are all GREAT and so is the rest of the main card.
  • Barao has send recently that he’s considering moving to America in order to increase his popularity as a fighter. It will be interesting to see if he’s doing anything differently in the days leading up to the fight, and afterwards (Should he win, we don’t want to look past TJ Dillashaw.)
  • The UFC has been running a video blog series called “Embedded” that gives you a “behind the scenes” look at everything leading up to the event. It’s worth checking out, here.
  • Prelims: Don’t miss them. There’s guys like Chisea, Iaquinta Sicilia and Chris Holdsworth fighting in the prelims to round things out. Chris Holdsworth has a great nickname, too, it’s Chris “Hold It Down” Holdsworth.
  • If the following video doesn’t get you hyped to watch Renen Barao fight, check your pulse.

The UFC doesn’t have as many hugely bankable stars as they have in the past, there’s always going to be champions and big names but the opportunity to really build Renen Barao into a star is not something the UFC can afford to pass up. 2013 to now has  really represented a changing of the guards in the UFC, with a lot of new blood replacing some long-standing champions which is great for shaking up a division but not ideal when you need huge PPV stars to bring home the bacon.
