News Roundup: Aldo Out, Dillashaw vs Barao Rematch, Sonnen Still In

Articles

Bad news for Chad Mendes, who was hoping to avenge his only career loss to Jose Aldo on August 2nd at UFC 176, he’s going to have to wait a little bit longer as reports have surfaced that Aldo is injured and can’t fight. It’s a shoulder injury, and Aldo won’t be able to train for 3 weeks.

Setting our sights a little further ahead to the end of August for UFC 177, the rematch between TJ Dillashaw and Renen Barao has all but been officially announced and is expected to take place, and frankly it’s kind of bullshit. What do they stand to gain from this immediate rematch? Dillashaw dominated the first fight, it wasn’t even competitive. How does that justify an immediate rematch? Sure, Barao was a dominant champion but it’s not like he was steamrolling everyone. If TJ wins again, well, that’s what’s expected of him at point so he’s got nothing to gain and everything to lose from this match up. If Barao wins, the division looks exactly like it did a couple of months ago – with a champ who’s already cleared it out. It’s just not an interesting match.

It’s possible that they bump this one forward to salvage the 176 card, but I guess we’ll see…

Finally, Chael Sonnen is still going to be competing at Metamoris 4 despite his recent drug test. Metamoris isn’t sanctioned, and they don’t do drug tests so they don’t care about the results. There’s no way they would give up their headliner if  they didn’t have to. Plus let’s face it, there’s no amount of TRT in the world that’s going to help you against one of the best BJJ players on the planet.
