Ellen Page Outs Herself As Women’s MMA Fighter

Articles

In a poignant, brave and moving speech at the THRIVE Conference, the Canadian actress known for her starring role in the cult-classic Juno revealed that she is a women’s MMA fighter.

“I’m here today because I am a mixed martial artist,” Page said. “And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.” Page went on to say that “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that.”

Even in 2014, women’s martial arts are still stigmatized in society, so this was an incredibly brave move on Ellen’s behalf, and we  proudly stand next to her in full support. Kudos! Hopefully this helps other young ladies to be more open about their martial arts, without feeling the need to keep that in the closet.

Reactions to Ellen Page’s announcement have been mixed, but most are along the lines of “Ewwww, I never knew she was Canadian!
