Conor Thanks Commission For Giving Him This Huge Advantage Over Floyd

It has been confirmed that the Nevada State Athletic Commission has approved the use of 8oz gloves. As confirmed in the tweet, Nevada commission votes to approve the “one-time” use of 8-ounce gloves for the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor bout. Conor also sent out a post on Instagram thanking them and saying they made a great decision.

It wasn’t all Conor’s idea, though. Floyd has also brought this up. We weren’t sure if Floyd was simply saying it because he didn’t think it would happen, or if he’s just so confidant that Conor doesn’t ‘stand a chance that Floyd is happy to help stack things in Conor’s favor a bit. Conor is used to using lighter MMA gloves, so the 8oz brings it closer than typical  boxing gloves. It could help give Conor a little extra speed, although others argue it won’t matter at all and it’s all just for show.

The standard for any fight over the 147-pound category is 10-ounce gloves, however after discussion both Mayweather and McGregor requested the change even though just a day before the Association of Ringside Physicians cautioned against changing the glove requirements.

“Unless there is scientific evidence to support the view that such a change might improve the safety of the bout, we should strongly caution against allowing current regulations to be over-ruled,” ARP board chairman Dr. Raymond Monsell wrote to the Nevada’s athletic commission, per Marc Raimondi of MMAFighting.com. “To do so would also set a precedent for future bouts.”

We’re unsure what Floyd’s stance was behind the scenes. If he didn’t want these gloves, and they still approved them, that would be a big surprise – unless the tides are shifting and the questionable commission is actually willing to go against Floyd’s wishes, maybe they see this as their last chance to cash in on Floyd and they see Conor as their next golden goose?

Either way, what we know for sure is that Conor got the gloves he wanted to use, and he’s very happy about it, and he’s giving a ton of praise to the commission.

There are a handful of things that have tipped the scales a little bit towards Conor, and we can add the gloves to the list, but is it frankly going to be enough to overcome the sheer skill difference? Well, time will tell, that’s why they fight… Well, that and a billion dollars, but still.
